Likom uses the 6 Sigma management tool as a methodology to improve our
business processes, manufacturing efficiency, capacity utilisation,
strategic vendor relations and customer response time.
Since the launch of the 6 Sigma programme in March 2001, Likom has seen
positive bottom-line impact from growth benefits, cost savings efficiencies
and quality improvements as 6 Sigma touches everything that goes on in
Likom, transforming what and how people work as Likom strives for near
perfection in every process.
Likom Caseworks has managed to achieve its target of improving the yield at
the final assembly area from 97.5% to 98.5%. The project concentrates on
improving layout, productivity and minimising work in progress. This
provides instant feedback and reduces handling, rework and non-value added
costs which could add up to savings of RM150,000 a year.
In the case of Likom CMS, the re-layout of the Surface Mounted
Technology line and management of facility to improve utilisation has
enabled the company to increase hourly output by 35%. This activity has
resulted in extra production capacity to cater for complete products and
enhanced the flexibility of scheduling to meet customers' requirement for
just in time delivery.
